Dielectric anisotropy in the smectic phases of liquid crystals

Abstract
We measured the dielectric anisotropy Δε of two compounds (507 and 508) of the p-pentoxy-benzylidene-alkylaniline series, in their nematic and smectic phases : A and B for 508, A, B and C for 507. Δε increases strongly in the smectic phases. We interpret this by an increase of the dipole-dipole correlations.
